Kupu Takutai- Repo 2024

Kia ora koutou, it’s Māori Language Week for 2024!

Te Hunga Takutai o Aotearoa (New Zealand Coastal Society) are excited to celebrate Māori Language Week in Aotearoa! We have produced poster whā (4) to encourage te reo Māori in coastal mahi (work) and everyday lives.

Repo (wetlands) is our 2024 theme. Repo are a major component within the whakapapa (connection) of our rivers (awa) and lakes (roto) to the moana (sea). Wetlands providing significant spawning grounds and habitat for diverse, culturally important taonga, including plants, animals, fish, birds, and insects.

How many did you know the names of? Can you weave these into your language today?

Please share the Kupu Takutai poster far and wide.

Kia kaha te reo Māori!

We acknowledge there may be additional alternative te reo Māori translations for some of the coastal terms used in this poster and many kupu have a deeper meaning. For example tātahi is beach from the inland perspective looking out to sea. Some alternative kupu for beach are tuaone, one, tahamoana (seaside) and uta (beach from the sea perspective heading to the shore).
