In December 2021 the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'Apai (HTHH) caldera volcano in the Kingdom of Tonga, approximately 2000 km north-east of Aoteroa, awoke. On January 15 2022, after a period of unrest, a large eruption produced ash plumes and generated tsunami and shock waves, which were experienced globally.
