Bio: Mr. Karunakar is a coastal engineer with knowledge of numerical modelling, structural design and GIS. His capabilities include a mix of field data collection, to the optimisation of protection works to minimize the environmental impact. His ability to code gives him an edge of customizing modeling and design tools. He works primarily for beach nourishment, coastal protection, hazard quantification and environmental impact assessment.

He has worked as a scientist with the National Institute of Ocean Technology, India for coastal and environmental engineering consulting in the past. He has gained knowledge from industry experts working for Deltares, IH Cantabria, IIT Madras, University of Calabria, NIO-India and others. He worked for some major projects like Kalpasar dam, Visakhapatnam artificial reef and Tiracol estuary management. He is associated with KyuGIS, where he is working on developing webGIS enabled tools to identify Sea level rise related risk for coastal properties using public datasets. He actively promotes FOSS tools.
