Bio: Tom is a principal coastal engineer and researcher at Tonkin + Taylor International. He has 15 years professional engineering experience working on coastal process and hazard assessment, numerical and physical modelling of coastal, offshore and estuarine processes; and the design of coastal structures and beach nourishment schemes. He has publishing widely on surf zone processes, remote sensing techniques, advanced statistical analysis of environmental data and coastal hazard techniques. His PhD, undertaken at the University of New South Wales, investigated the effect of wave grouping on wave breaking, surf zone processes, nearshore structural design and hazard.
Tom is currently involved in a range of consulting and research projects in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific; particularly on the adaptation of vulnerable Pacific states to the challenges of natural hazard and climate change. Tom has recently co-authored the NZ Ministry for the Environment Coastal Hazards and Climate Change Guidance and is lead author on the PRIF Guidance for Coastal Protection Works in Pacific Island Countries.
Tom is Chair of the New Zealand Coastal Society, a technical group of Engineers New Zealand and Asia-Pacific Vice-Chair of PIANC International Young Professionals Commission, a global non-profit organisation providing guidance for sustainable waterborne transport infrastructure for ports and waterways.
